Workflow Problem - "Pre"

Hello.

I have an existing workflow that was created over a year ago with a condition of (PRE('<Status>') <> [<Status>]) AND ([<Status>] = "Qualified")

I am trying to create a new workflow using this same exact condition only changing "Status" to "Sales Stage" and "Stage Stage" = "Closed/Won" but I am getting a syntax error. I have tried removing " to ' and adding in ( but nothing seems to work. Can anyone advise what is wrong with the condition?
