Should FRA reside on ASM or OS file system?

We have implemented ASM for our RAC databases, however, we are not sure if we should create FRA on ASM disk group or not.  We would prefer to keep the backups local to the server instead of sending off to Netbackup through RMAN.  What are the benefits of having FRA on ASM over the OS file system?

Our databases are fairly small, between 5GB to 100GB.  We have database version 11.2.0.4 and GI 12c.

Is it recommended for FRA to reside on the OS filesystem or FRA?  Which is better?
