Can a long text member be added to a Planning application?

Hello,

We would like to add a long description field in a 11.1.2.3.501 Planning application.  I created a member, and added it to a form.  I get a message that the maximum length is 255.  Is there some member or field properties I can adjust to get a larger field?  500 is better, and 2000 is better yet.
