what are the pros and cons of having 1 set of books point to multiple legal entities in release 11.5

Is it ok to have 2 legal entities representing different lines of business point to 1 set of books inside GL? What are some of the pros and cons with this approach? We are on R11.5.10. Are there any impacts while upgrading to R12? Please elucidate.
