Dropping messages between ingress & egress of SBC

We're running an HA pair of 3820s w/ firmware SCX6.1.0 and we seem to be dropping SIP messages between the public and private realms. via packet traces performed on the SBC, we'll see   (1) incoming invite from an external session agent; (2) the invite is properly passed to an internal session agent; (3) the internal session agent responds with trying, ringing, and ok; (4) the external session agent does not see any response to the invite and issues another (5) eventually messages do get passed from end to end, but by then the endpoints may have timed out due to
