Oracle SE Streams replication archivelog size

We have Oracle Standard editions 11gR2 and have set up Oracle Streams process to replicate a bunch of tables to another Oracle database that is physically separated, but within same domain.

It seems archivelog must be on in order to have Streams replication working and the size of archivelog Oracle is generating seems quite excessive. For example, we have replicated just over 600k rows of data and the archive log size has grown to over 30 GBs. I can't imagine this is normal.

I have set up the Streams process with one capture queue, one propagation queue (source) and one apply queue (destination). The destination Oracle database (backup) is not accumulating as much archivelog (few GBs) as the source database.
