Advance pricing category code issue in item master and item branch ??

Hello Everyone ,

I am very much confused ,in our client system one of category code for Item master and Item branch information  is different so I am confused whether the system will pickup

the item master category code or item branch category code , I am not able to understand the concept of the category code so please can any one also suggest me

any whitepaper for this??????
