How and when is OHV Overhead Variance calculated in Standard Costing?

We have implemented Standard Costing, GMF Subledger Variance is set to Scale to Plan, and we are seeing some postings to the Journal Line Type OHV Overhead Variance for some Batch Closes.  How is this OHV calulated in Standard Costing (can't find a reference in the OPM Cost Management User Guide) and is it only the Batch Close event that includes this in the Journal Line Definitions?
