what is the purpose of gain_or_loss_ref in xla_distribution_links

Would like to know the following . The etrm says it is used to track the lines considered for gain/loss calculation but need more detailed explanation please

a) when / why is the column gain_or_loss_ref populated in xla_distribution_links populated for Invoice type of transactions

b) when / why  is the column gain_or_loss_ref populated in xla_distribution_links populated for Payment type of transactions ( including Payment Clearing)

c) In a scenario where there is ALC ledger, would the primary xla distribution links be null for this column and the ALC xla distribution links be not null for this column or vice versa ?
