ORA-00236: snapshot operation disallowed: mounted control file is a backup after 11.2.0.4 ugrade

After upgrading to 11.2.0.4 from 11.2.0.3 this weekend, I am getting the following error when trying to backup a controlfilecopy from a Hitachi ShadowImage sync: ORA-00236: snapshot operation disallowed: mounted control file is a backup. This worked without issue immediately before the upgrade.
