Error 41453 when importing Account data

Error 41453 (An unexpected error occurred during the import of the following row:) occurs when I try to import a csv file that contains the contents of a new data field.

The csv file contains two fields: the External ID and a picklist value that is to be added to existing Account records.

The system finds duplicates in the Account table, based on the External ID but somehow refuses to populate the picklist field.

Parameters for the import:

Method to identify duplicates: External Unique ID (This seems to work because the log says the import found duplicate records).

Overwrite existing records.
