NVidia driver installation caused UEK (version 3.8) to crash during bootup

We just installed Oracle release 6.6 on a machine with a NVidia graphics card.  The installation was fine and everything seemed to work.  We have a 3D application that needs the full capability of the GPU so we got the binary NVidia driver from their website.  After installation of the NVidia driver, the machine will not boot.  The console shows a kernel exception.  Because the kernel crashes during the boot, there are no log files and the crash information does not seem to be recorded anywhere.  This problem does not seem to affect the 2.6 kernel but I have not
