Parent number invalid error message

We are using the Supervisor (alias ANPA) field in the f060116 to reference the AB# of a particular employee's supervisor but are receiving an invalid parent number error message whenever anything on the F060116 is updated.  Error 2736.  Has anyone else experienced this?  What is causing it?
