Issue with node manager startup during upgrade

We have completed the 12.2 base upgrade and were starting the admin server prior to applying the ad patches. We are getting the following error when trying to startup admin server:

NMProcess: Mar 10, 2015 8:49:59 AM weblogic.nodemanager.server.NMServer main

NMProcess: SEVERE: Fatal error in node manager server

NMProcess: java.io.IOException: Couldn't get lock for /u11/oracle/jvsd/fs1/FMW_Home/wlserver_10.3/common/nodemanager/nmHome1/nodemanager.log

We find that the nmHome1 folder is missing under the nodemanager directory.

Please advice.
