Create a data set from an excel workbook with multiple sheets?

I've been pointed this way from SR 3-10344877281 where we are asking if it's possible to use an Excel workbook with multiple sheets as a datasource for an app created in Mobile Application Designer.

It has been suggested that we create data sets in BI Publisher from the multi-sheet workbook and then create the MAD app pointing to this BIP data model.

However, when I try to create a data set from an excel workbook with multiple sheets BI Publisher doesn't recognise any worksheets in workbooks with multiple sheets. If I use a workbook with only one worksheet everything works fine, but this defeats the objective.
