Shared filesystem

We have a client that has two meta data servers - active and standby with a SL3000 with T10000D drives that is partitioned with host FC connections, we are also using ZFS storage with NFS shares for the first two copies, the third and fourth copies will be on tape.

Would it be recommended to rather configure a shared file system - one primary and the other as an alternative in case the primary server fails? The client does not want to introduce Cluster into the configuration.
