Must clear cache to apply user preference changes

We're currently upgrading to OpenUI 8.1.1.11.13.

I found that I must clear my cache (in Chrome) to get user preferences to display.  Is there a way around this?  Here's my problem:

If I drill-down on an Account from the Account Home Page, it will then display in the Recent Records as long as I'm logged in.  If I log out (via File > Log Out) and then re-log, the record is NOT displayed in the Recent Records.  If I close Chrome after logging out and try again, it is still NOT displayed; however, if I clear the cache between logging out and logging back in, the record will display.
