Is Pillar Axiom Path Manager necessary

Is it a requirement for Pillar Axiom Path Manager to be installed on the client in order for the host to talk to an Axiom 600? I am trying to connect our Pillar to a FalconStor NSS but am just getting a not communicating message. I can't install APM on the FalconStor. Is that a show stopper? I understand that I wouldn't have multi path support but I am just looking to see if I can get them at least talking to each other.
