Getting EXP-00008/ORA-01406 errors on a full export after an upgrade to Oracle 12.1.0.2

My full exports have been failing with the following after an upgrade fro 11.2.0.4 to 12.1.0.2:

. exporting materialized views

. exporting snapshot logs

. exporting job queues

. exporting refresh groups and children

. exporting dimensions

. exporting post-schema procedural objects and actions

. exporting user history table

EXP-00008: ORACLE error 1406 encountered

ORA-01406: fetched column value was truncated

EXP-00000: Export terminated unsuccessfully

Has anyone seen similar problems and have a solution?
