Microsoft says we have to dedicate a SBC to support O365 UM integration

Per Microsoft Support a dedicated SBC is required for O365 UM integration between our PBX and their hosted platform. When I asked for the reason or documentation to support the requirement they said I should check with Acme, does anyone know more about this requirement and why it is so? We have two 3820's currently providing SIP Trunk connectivity to our PBX and to Lync and figured we could utilize them for the UM integration as well.
