Oracle RUEI - use of openldap for LDAP authentication

Has anyone used openldap on a Linux RUEI environment to connect to an LDAP infrastructure for user authentication?  If so, any tips you can pass along.  the instructions in the documentation are not all that helpful...any guidance is appreciated....
