What is the best way of Versioning cartridges as per version nomenclature

Hi All,

What is the best way of versioning cartridges.

How exactly the Major, Minor, Maintenance , Generic , Customer  ( 1.0.0.0.0 ) are chosen when deploying newer versions.

I faced an issue while deploying newer version, though the flag(purge cartridge while deploy, purge orders while deploy) to false.
