Upgrading to 12C

I had a question on upgrading a primary database to 12C that has a active dataguard instance attached to it. How would you typically upgrade both the databases to 12C from 11.2.0.4? Is it possible to upgrade both of them simultaneously? If so please let us know the metalink articles to follow.
