Changing Asset Type from Capitalized to Expensed

Is it possible to change the Asset Type from Capitalized to Expenses? We have a situation where we want to change some asset types from capitalized to expensed. I set up an asset category for expenses items with the capitalized flag turned off, but it won't allow me to change the asset type from the workbench. I also attempted to do a mass reclassification and that fails also. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
