Why is Smartview converting a long hyphen to a question mark

We have a dimension member that contains a long hyphen i.e. "The Dim Member – Development" and when I see it in Smartview the hyphen is changed to a question mark i.e. "The Dim Member ? Development".  What is causing this long hyphen to be changed to a question mark in SmartView?  I am using Smartview version 11.1.2.5.400 but it also occurs with the earlier version of SmartView.
