Is there any more indepth documentation on SDATA fields.

Is there any indepth documentation on SDATA fields.  The latest Oracle versions have increased the limit from 32 to 99 but is there any issues I should be aware of?  For example, are these ok for fields that are updated frequently?  How are they implemented and what are insert/update/delete implications?  How do they affect index build and optimize times?  Any references would be appreciated.
