Setting maxphys Kernel Parameter

While trying to tune a UFS filesystem on a FC SAN, I came across the maxphys Kernel Tuning Parameter in Solaris 10.

Many website articles and forums on the subject commonly suggest upping this value to 8Mb from the default.

I understand the purpose of the parameter, and have tested changes to it on a T4-2 LDOM with positive results.

What I don't understand though, is how the value of 8Mb was chosen.  Most people seem to choose it, but I can't find any formula or underlying specification that says going higher is pointless.  The best unsubstantiated answer I have
