upgrading APEX 3.1.1 TO 4.2

Hello  

We are  in the middle of the  fusion middleware  upgrade  from 10g to 11g,  in  10g  we  are  running  APEX  3.1.1,   and Oracle HTTP  with mod_plsql; (Oracle database  11.2.0.1+)

as part  of the upgrade  we  want  to  upgrade  to   APEX 4.2  and  Oracle Rest data services  2.0.10, our  Oracle database  is   11.2.0.1+;

according APEX  documentation once  APEX 4.2  is  installed the existing applications that were  built on APEX 3.1.1  are automatically  update to run in APEX 4.2, however 

there  could be  manual  work  regarding  components that  might  required  to change the user interface, I wonder  if   rather than  upgrading   to APEX 4.2

we could  keep  APEX  3.1.1  and  replace mod_sql  for   Oracle Rest data services  2.0.10  ...? is  this  correct....?
