11.2.0.3 SE Oracle RHEL 5 to 12.1.0.1 SE RHEL6

Hello,

We have the following scenario and would like some advice on how to go about it.

Current DB:

OS : RHEL 5.0

DB : 11.2.0.3 Standard Edition

Size : Approx 1 TB.

We want to move to:

OS RHEL 6.0

DB : 12.1.0.1 Standard Edition, non CDB.

We thought we can do this: Is that doable?

RMAN backup of current DB, can be restored to new server which has latest version of OS as well DB? 

I tried with RHEL 6.0 backup of 11g R2 to 12c, only DB version is different, there itself I got an error, wondering is that even doable with RHEL 5.0 and 6.0 jump?
