What is the function of cabinet file in siebel open ui

Hi,

In the folder SWEApp\PUBLIC\enu\23044\applets\ there are multiple files with .cab extension. These are cabinet files for instance SiebelAx_Prodselection.cab is used during selection of a product while creating an order. Need to understand what is the exact functionality of .cab files.
