What is the purpose of the Type field when you defined Concurrent Managers?

I know the difference between an "Concurrent Manager" type and a "Transaction Manager" type, But over the years I am seeing new types added but no clear information as to their purpose and if we should be updating our existing managers to use one of these new types.
