when is the 'LNS' process involved in dataguard?

when is the 'LNS' process involved in dataguard ? is it only when we have the  'LGWR' included in log_archive_dest_2?eg

NAME                             TYPE    VALUE

------------------------------------ ----------- ------------------------------

log_archive_dest_2               string  SERVICE=dgdb LGWR ASYNC VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=dgbd

meaning without the 'LGWR' parameter,no 'LNS' process will appear on primary?
