Can I create an installed base record and warranty contract after shipment?

A specific item was set as serialized at sales order issue, but not installed base trackable (oops). Can I create an installed base record and warranty contract now?  The item shipped last year and we just discovered the error in item setup when a Customer requested a warranty claim and we had no installed base record or warranty contract for the item.
