Making Lot numbers generic across organization

Hi,

We are process manufacturing organization. We are thinking to make our lot numbers generic in oracle. All actual lot numbers received and Issued will be maintained with our shipping partners but in oracle we maintain and transact generic lot numbers. This would make transactions easy for operations.

What would be the issues you foresee hear? Any costing etc., please suggest.
