return item number EXTVAR

I'd like to return an item number to a P/Q line dynamically based on user input. Smart parts doesn't fit our setup so I am wondering if this is possible with F3293.EPGM (External Program)

I'm familiar with C and NER but I can't seem to find any documentation about what happens when the value is returned? What are my options and how do you assign the return value.
