what is direct routing for the ZS3-4 Storage Appliance?

I was reviewing the README for the latest patch offering for our ZS3-4 Storage Appliance and found the following notation but, there isn't enough information to help me understand what it is and it's benefit to our customers;

Direct Routing

Appliance administrators can now configure an IP interface to be part of any number of IP subnets, without changing the IP address. This avoids the need to configure additional IP addresses or needlessly loop IP packets through a local router.

Can anyone explain it?
