What's the role of derby server?

Hello,

I noticed startWebLogic.sh script automatically starts a deby server. I was looking for information about this component in Oracle Documentation and it seems it's absolutely not required and can be disabled with noderby option when starting WLS.

So, my question is: what's the role of this component and where is it required (for dev and production environments)?

I'm working with 12c Infrastructure, HTTP Server, OER, B2B, SOA/BPM Suite, OSB and MFT components.
