how to integrate external system with siebel Open UI

We are planning to migrate 8.1.1.14 with Open UI. Before that we have 8.1.1.9.In 8.1.1.9 external system is using activex control to call siebel workflow .But now in Open UI activex is no logner used then.how to re implement functionality in Open Ui.

Currently we are thinking like we need to write JS file which will call that BS file and then workflow.

Please suggest.
