Send Separate Remittance Advices email performance

We have recently implemented sending separate remittance advice by email using standard functionality.

It's working fine but each email is being generated and sent 3 - 4 mins apart.

For a payment run with 500 payments that's about 29 hours !!!

What do other people see ?

The log file for the concurrent request does not have any timestamps, but I can see that it sticks at the message "Passing formatting Locale to XDO API: null" for the 3-4 mins and then a new email is generated and sent.
