PBCS - Roles - How do the roles created and assigned by the administrator get moved to the planning

We have set up a few roles and assigned various users to them, however, these roles do not appear to be used by PBCS.  Am I missing something and is there a way to use these or are these in anticipation of a future update.  I cannot find anything in the documentation other than how to create them and assign users.
