How to correct a assignment and person effective date?

Hi,

Our user entered information for a rehire using an incorrect date (05/26/15 rather than 06/01/15). No payrolls have been processed yet, but we are unable to delete the assignment as it's the primary assignment.

What is the best way to correct this?
