Staging an oracle home

I am upgrading a system from 9.2.0.6 to 11.1.0.6.  I would like to do the install on the new 11.1 oracle home before the actual upgrade date.  I won't run root.sh after the software install in the new Oracle Home.  I will wait for upgrade day to run root.sh, update etc/oratab and the paths in the .profile .  Here's the thing though.  The install requires me to run rootpre.sh.  Can I run the 11.1 rootpre.sh and still run the 9.2.0.6 for the 2-3 days before the upgrade?  I'm thinking it is ok because if the install failed and you pulled the old database off tape, you still have the environment modified from that 11.1 rootpre.sh run.  Can you see any issues with this?   Also, I see it has to be run with the database and instance shut down.  Just curious, what happens if it is run database and instance are open and running when you run the
