Resizing ASM diskgroup fails with ORA-15289

On our development Oracle RAC installation running Oracle 12c Standard Edition we were trying to add disk space, but received an 'ORA-15289: disk %d is limited to 563200 MB on instance 2' in the ASM alert logs. How do I correct this issue? Do I have to add another ASM disk?
