What is the relation between Inter company segment qualifier and intercompany/intracompany ledger op

Hi Gurus,

Release version 12.1.3,we have a doubt that

1.what is the use of Intercompany segment qualifier ? Is it mandatory to enable for intra and/or inter company transactions ?

2. is there any link between Intercompany segment qualifier and intra and/or inter company ledger option at ledger level ?
