First Distribution Identifier

In the Accounting Attribute Assignments section (in Financial Accounting Hub), we map the source / transaction object attributes to seeded / standard attributes. In this section, I can see first distribution identifier, second distribution identifier , distribution type etc.

What is underlying significance of the distribution identifier and distribution type. Appreciate if you can provide inputs with an example.
