Netra SPARC T4-1: Cannot Reset OpenBoot Parameters to Default

We have several Netra SPARC T4-1 servers with (as far as I can tell) the same firmware/ILOM/etc.  We have an in-house tool that accesses these servers through the serial management port to configure each server into a known state.  Part of this configuration is to reset the OpenBoot parameters (auto-boot?, boot-device, etc) to defaults.  The tool uses the ILOM command "set /HOST/bootmode state=reset_nvram" to accomplish the reset to OpenBoot defaults.  This command works through the tool and even by hand on most servers, but fails consistently on at least one (we have not tested all our T4s).
