Hyperion 11.1.2.1 to 11.1.2.3. Is Upgrade-In-Place a viable option?

We need to upgrade Hyperion 11.1.2.1 to 11.1.2.3. We are looking at all the options. We have heard that 'upgrade-in-place' is definitely NOT the way to go. Can I get feedback from you as to which are the viable options?
