Payment Instrument in Preference Profiles - no blank?

I am trying to update some legacy payment terms after a change to customer master.

When I try to setup the preference, I receive and error, that a "blank" value is not allowed in the payment instrument field (alias-RYIN)

Why would the design disallow this?  Many payment terms have no payment instrument.

What other way could I address this issue?
