Has anyone figured out how to open XML clause documents from the supplier contract module and update

We are trying to update our clauses using word but when we update it and check it back in it says it can't read the file. We researched the issue and found that Word no longer supports custom XML due to a lawsuit. Is there anything else that we can use to update these XML files?
