Can the dba_name parameter be more than 8 characters?

The naming schema we use for our databases ends up making the SID 10-11 characters.  However, we've been noticing that the db_name parameter ends up truncating that, causing conflicts with the VSS Writer service.  Can the db_name be longer than just 8 characters?
